PlayStation 4 controllers will not work with PlayStation 5 games, Sony have confirmed via a post on the PlayStation Blog.
Addressing a number of burning issues about PS4 periphery accessibility with the approaching console, Sony shot down any hopes fans had of transitioning over their trusty DualShock 4 controllers to the new games.
In answer to the question about whether the current controllers could be used with the upcoming games, Sony retorted flatly: "No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we're bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller."

But it's not all doom and gloom. Other peripherals like Sony wireless headsets, steering wheels, PlayStation Move controllers and the PlayStation camera will all be compatible with the PS5.
It's also worth bearing in mind that your old DualShock 4 controllers will work with backwards-compatible PlayStation 4 games played on the PS5 just fine. It's only on the new PlayStation 5 titles that players will need the DualSense.
Sony did make sure to note that not all third-party controllers and accessories would be guaranteed to work with the PlayStation 5, so it's worth checking in with the manufacturers of all your weird and wonderful gear to see what they're capable of.

In other DualSense news, a new trademark was recently filed in the USA which might hint at what those "new capabilities and features" could be. The phrase "Heighten Your Senses" could possibly allude to the built-in haptic feedback, and how that might work in the hands of players.
As always, we'll have to wait until the PlayStation 5 is released later this year to get a proper look at exactly what the DualSense can do. In related PlayStation news, a smaller digital State of Play event (in comparison to June's big reveal one) has been confirmed by Sony, for Thursday August 6th (at 9pm UK time). It'll focus on PlayStation 4 and PSVR games, and also include some indie news. So, don't expect that new Silent Hill, okay?
