Skyrim fans horrified by secret so dark Bethesda never wanted us to find it

No wonder it's cut content

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim may not be a horror game but there are plenty of discoveries to be had in the Bethesda RPG that will make your skin crawl.

That is definitely the case for one secret area which was considered too dark for Bethesda to even add to the game.

Across the world of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players can stumble across all manner of dark stories played out through environmental storytelling.

This can include lighthouses full of bodies and bloody notes, corpses found in questionable conditions and much more.

However, one player once took to r/skyrim to share an area of Skyrim which was home to a dark story.

This came after one user asked, “which NPC has the darkest secret?

On this playthrough, I am realizing how often folks are deceptive to the dragonborn. Who's got the darkest secret and how do you find out in-game?”

Fellow Skyrim fans came forward with their own suggestions but it was one user that shared information on Rorikstead, a settlement consisting of two cottages, an inn and a manor.

The furthest settlement from Whiterun along the western border near The Reach, the user had the following information to share about Rorikstead.

“The entirety of Rorikstead. The full secret of that little town is pretty much cut content so you can't actually get to the bottom of it, but there's hints all over the place about it not being a quaint little farming town.

“I'm not going to go into the full details, but walk through it and ask yourself why there's only one (childless at that) woman, and two kids whose mother died in childbirth,” they continued.

“Then poke through the houses and ask yourself why a small town of farmers has a need for soul gems and books on Daedra worship. I think we found the secret to how that land suddenly became fertile and it wasn't "hard work."”

If you do not want to explore this location for yourself, it turns out that the town regularly sacrifices women to the Daedra in exchange for making their crops more fertile.

“If you really want more, downloading the cutting room floor mod will reveal all secrets,” another user suggested.

This is a dark story indeed and one that can be easily missed by the average Skyrim enjoyer.

It also goes to show how much we haven’t noticed in previous playthroughs and why the Bethesda RPG has stood the test of time over a decade on.
