Outlast developer Red Barrels started teasing its next project a few weeks back, and we now know what it is. No, it's not Outlast 3, but it is a new horror experience set in the same twisted universe. According to a press release, The Outlast Trials is a new four-player co-op horror experience that's in the "early stages of production."

This new game in the series isn't a sequel to the first two, but a prequel. The Outlast Trials takes place in the "middle of the Cold War era", which doesn't really narrow things down given that particular war technically lasted for several decades. Still, we can probably assume the late 70s or early 80s. That's pure speculation on my part, though.

"Our team is hard at work creating a new experience that will bring fear and anxiety to millions of players, whether they go through the experiments alone or with friends," studio co-founder David Chateauneuf said in a statement.

"Now we've done our proof of concept, it is time to focus on content creation, variety... and gore."

While The Outlast Trials is being designed as a cooperative multiplayer horror jamboree, players will still be able to dive in and experience the game solo if they wish. It's unclear exactly how multiplayer will factor into this new game, but the art Red Barrels shared (below) seems to suggest a few things.

The tagline "when freedom ends" implies to me that players will be prisoners of some Saw-like experiment, and will have to work together to escape. I'd also say this is backed up by the fact the characters are wearing jumpsuits with numbers on them, and tagged bracelets of some kind.

The grisly-looking headsets also suggest that maybe certain players will be able to see things others can't? I like the idea of having to guide a friend through a room full of traps and ghouls they can't see for some reason. Again though, that's just speculation on my part.

Oh, and if you're thinking the headsets in the art hint that The Outlast Trials will be a VR experience, Red Barrels took to Facebook to shut that rumour down pretty quickly.

It's unclear what platforms The Outlast Trials will come to, or when exactly we can expect to see it. The first two Outlast titles were wonderfully chilling horror experiences though, and I'm excited to see what Red Barrels can do by throwing three friends into the mix.
