Steam just added a fresh new feature that’s going to be an immense help when it comes to getting the best performance out of your PC games.
Are you the type to spend hours tweaking your settings and messing about in menus before you even start a new playthrough?
Do you sometimes worry that you could be getting more out of your performance, to the point that it stops you from actually enjoying whatever game you’re playing?
Then I have some great news for you, because Valve just pushed a new update to Steam that includes something players have been begging for since 2003: the Steam In-Game Performance Monitor.

So, what does it actually do? In layman's terms, it helps you figure out how well your games are actually running.
If you want a more technical explanation, I’ll let Valve take over from here.
“The new performance overlay will show you frame rate values, similar to the old FPS counter, but it can also break out generated frames from DLSS or FSR vs actual game frame rate”, Valve revealed in an official post on Steam.
“It can show you min/max single frame values and a graph of frame rate over time. Additionally, it will show you CPU performance information, GPU performance information, and system memory usage information. These pieces of data can be useful to understand the causes of bad game performance whether that be a slow CPU, GPU, or too high graphics settings that are over subscribing your video or system ram.”
However, even if you’re the more technically-minded sort who already has a program that does this for you, you can still benefit from Steam’s new feature.
Instead of running a program that checks all of this info for you, running this through Steam will actually be better for your overall performance (because you already have to have Steam open to actually play games anyway).
Oh, and the update is already out, by the way. Just go over to the “In Game” tab under Settings to enable it. Gotta wonder why any other PC storefront even bothers competing with Steam at this point.
