A classic FPS of the original PlayStation and PS2 eras is making its long-awaited return after more than 20 years in the wilderness.

The game in question is Delta Force, which made its debut on PC in 1998, and then spawned two more sequels before arriving on the original PlayStation in 2002 with Delta Force: Urban Warfare.

The series would later leap into the next generation with Delta Force: Black Hawk Down in 2005, followed by Delta Force: Black Hawk Down - Team Sabre in 2006 on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, both of which were released on PC first.

Despite the series getting several more releases on PC, the ‘Black Hawk Down’ entries would be the last time we’d see it launch on consoles, but that is about to change very soon.

Developed by Team Jade, the rebooted Delta Force was recently released on PC via Steam as a free-to-play title as well as on compatible mobile devices. However, it’s also set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S next month.

“Delta Force is back!” reads the description of the game.

“The iconic series returns as the definitive free-to-play modern team-based tactical shooter and featuring three distinct gameplay modes: large-scale PvP warfare, intense extraction shooter action, and a remake of the legendary Black Hawk Down campaign.”

Delta Force is currently available to “pre-order” on the PlayStation Store for £7.39, but this is to gain access to DLC, in-game currency and XP bonuses when the game is launched. On its release, it will be free-to-play.

At some point following its launch, ‘Black Hawk Down’ will be offered as free DLC, inspired by the 2001 Ridley Scott movie of the same name.

There are often concerns that free-to-play games encourage pay-to-win mechanics, something that the developer is seemingly strongly against.

“We are committed to no pay-to-win, and development is driven by community feedback,” claims Team Jade. “Fair play is a top priority, and our dedicated G.T.I. security anti-cheat team ensures a fair gameplay experience by proactively targeting and removing cheaters.”

Delta Force will arrive on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on 19 August 2025.
