The team's going to go quiet on development, too.

One of the biggest stories out of BlizzCon so far (though it was leaked ahead of the conference) is the news that Overwatch is getting a sequel - one that focuses on story. However, while the game has now been officially announced and some details of how the game will play have been revealed, there's no word on when it will be released. Well, not exactly no word, more no plan.

When asked when Overwatch 2 would be releasing, the game's director Jeff Kaplan said "I have no idea. Just let us make it great, that's what we care about more than anything. We don't have a date in mind." He also seemed to head off future questions about the game and plans for showing it off further by saying that the team will "go dark" after BlizzCon to focus on development.

Overwatch 2 is an odd prospect for a sequel because in some ways it's a kind of update for the original game. So as not to split the playerbase, all the PvP updates that are coming in the sequel are also being released for the original game, meaning Overwatch 2 players can play with Overwatch 1 players. You'll need to buy the new game if you want to access the PvE missions, though.

The PvE campaign is split into Story missions and Hero missions. Story missions are co-op missions where you'll team up with a set of heroes to take on robot armies, following a campaign structure. The Hero missions, meanwhile, are less story-heavy and are more like co-op raids that are built to be replayed.

You'll want to play both, if not for the story, to unlock customisation options that let you tweak your heroes' abilities. For instance, Tracer can alter her Pulse Bomb to hit multiple enemies. Though, these customisations won't roll into PvP, they're strictly for use in the Story and Hero missions.
