Look at those meaty chunks.

Appropriately oddly, the Oddworld: Soulstorm trailer that was part of the PlayStation 5 reveal event is called the reveal trailer. Odd because it was announced bac in 2016 and it's had a number of trailers and reveal events over the years. Though, what we saw as part of Sony's showcase certainly felt meatier than what's come before. And I say that because chunks of meat were all over the screen - this is a Oddworld game after all.

The Abe games are side-scrolling, puzzle solving platformers that have always featured deadly traps which turn your character and any of his followers into meaty chunks should they put a foot wrong. The reveal trailer for Soulstorm shows that is all present and correct in the new game.

Once again you are playing Abe and you're continuing your revolution against the corporations that run your planet. You'll need to free workers and guide them to safety, avoiding death around every corner. That may come from electrocution, crushing, being run over by a train, or simply shot.

Soulstorm looks very much like a return to the formula of Oddysee and Exodus, ignoring the first-person shooter spinoff Stranger's Wrath and the third-person platformer spinoff Munch's Oddysee. While both excellent games, neither found the same reception as the original Abe games. Maybe it's just because everyone loved Abe so much.

The PlayStation 5 event featured a lot of returning series - Ratchet & Clank, Spider-man, Little Big Planet, and Horizon Zero Dawn. But it's lovely to see Abe, a game that debuted on the original PlayStation back in 1997 present and correct on the new console. It gives the whole event something of a legacy feel.

Hopefully the developers will be showing a lot more of Abe now it's had its official reveal.
