It’s hard to separate, at this point, the Elder Scrolls franchise from its fantastic modding scene. From 2002’s The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind to 2011’s fifth entry Skyrim - receiving a new-gen 10th anniversary release on November 11 - Bethesda’s fantasy series is a rich and wonderful playground for those who want to take the base games to weird and wild new places. Or, sometimes, make them so beautiful you can’t quite get over it.
Such is the case with the ‘4X textures’ mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion by Kuzja80, available now on Nexus Mods (and brought to our attention by DSO Gaming). With 2006’s Oblivion enjoying continued popularity - helped no doubt by the wealth of memes it’s responsible for - this visual overhaul for the game will no doubt appeal to those who’d like to see it get a more up-to-date graphical update.

This is, writes its maker, a “full remake of all textures” from a previous version of the mod, adding a new quality level and optimisation, and no pixel grain effect. You’re going to need 6GB of VRAM to run this, and you’ll have to run the Oblivion EGL mod too, for the new textures to take effect.
