The future of the Star Wars franchise continues to look bright with multiple television shows, movies, and games in the pipeline.
However, it is the unfortunate truth that many projects are scrapped or cancelled before they even see the light of day and that seems to be the case for what once sounded like an exciting new Star Wars trilogy.
The trilogy was set to be headed by Knives Out and Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson but according to a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the movies will never come to be.
Following his work on The Last Jedi, Johnson reportedly said back in 2022 that he “would be sad” if he never got to work on a Star Wars project again and as a result, he entered into talks with Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy on developing ideas for a three-part saga.

However, after working on the hit Knives Out film series, Johnson soon decided to put all of his eggs into one basket and the Star Wars trilogy was soon scrapped.
“Nothing really happened with it,” Johnson said in the interview.
“We had a great time working together, and they said, ‘Let’s keep doing it.’ I said, ‘Great!’ I would kick ideas around with Kathy.
The short version is ‘Knives Out’ happened. I went off and made ‘Knives Out,’ and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries.

It’s the sort of thing if, down the line, there’s an opportunity to do it, or do something else in ‘Star Wars,’ I would be thrilled. But right now I’m just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy.”
Johnson went on to reveal that his ideas for the Star Wars trilogy were “all very conceptual” and that it never had an “outline or a treatment or anything”.
With Johnson being the director behind so many hit movies, it is a shame to see that the unnamed three-part saga will never come to be, well, at least not in the near future.
In the meantime, it seems as though some fans are happy about this development.

“Absolutely no one wants him to make anything related to Star Wars ever again,” one fan said simply.
Another user added, “Isn't this symptomatic of how Lucasfilm approach projects generally?
Johnson was announced years ago as going to make a trilogy but he never actually pitched them any story outlines?
Any wonder hardly any of their projects ever go anywhere.”
