It’s time to saddle up once more; the ‘Lost Dutchman's Treasure’ awaits discovery.
Whilst we’d expect Grand Theft Auto VI to be Rockstar Games’ sole focus, it’s actually been an eventful couple of weeks for Red Dead fans too.
Red Dead Online recently welcomed its first major content update in years in the form of ‘Strange Tales of the West Vol. 1’ which is about the closest to Undead Nightmare 2 as we’re likely getting.
It’s a great excuse to return to Red Dead Online, especially as the title suggests that more content is on the way in the form of a Vol. 2.

Naturally, this has added fuel to the fire concerning a Red Dead Redemption 2 new-gen update.
Insiders have been claiming that one is indeed on the way for months, bringing 60fps to the game, but nothing is yet to manifest.
In the meantime, I heartily recommend PC players of the base game download this fantastic mod which adds a brand new treasure hunt inspired by a real life counterpart.
‘The Lost Dutchman’s Treasure Hunt’ has been created by NexusMods users Amnu42.

It’s inspired by The Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine which is supposedly hidden away in the Southwestern United States.
I’ll admit, I hadn’t heard of this legend, but it’s incredibly interesting.
The mine is believed to be located in the Superstition Mountains, near Apache Junction which is east of Phoenix in Arizona.
It’s named after Jacob Waltz, a German immigrant, who reportedly found the mine in the 19th century and kept its location a secret.

Each year, people venture out to try and find it, with some even having sadly died in the process.
It’s estimated that 9,000 people attempt to find the gold mine each year.
Those who have died mainly went missing, which is not too surprising considering the harsh terrain.
One man, Barry Storm, claimed in his 1945 book Thunder God’s Gold that he narrowly escaped a sniper while trying to find the mine.

That sounds like an odd claim, but many who have sought out the mine since have been found to have been shot dead.
Several men were discovered dead with bullet wounds throughout the 1950s, with similar cases taking place in the 60s and 90s.
In the 80s, one man, Walt Gassler, was found dead from a heart attack but appeared to have found the mine, carrying gold ore in his backpack.
Honestly, this legend is a rabbit hole that I fear I’m about to get lost in, so back to Red Dead Redemption 2.

“The legendary Lost Dutchman's Gold treasure is now part of Red Dead Redemption 2. Are you smart enough to find it?” asks the synopsis of the mod.
If you download the mod, you’ll receive a subtle hint that kickstarts the quest at the beginning of Chapter 2 in the camp on the Horseshoe Overlook.
There are no drawn maps, just subtle environmental clues and signs.
Finding the mine isn’t going to be easy, but the real life attempts should’ve already led you to that conclusion.
