Cyberpunk 2077 third-person update leaves fans torn

Is this third person in the room with us?

Did you know that, at one point, Cyberpunk 2077 was going to feature a third-person mode?

Probably. I mean, alongside the whole flying cars thing, the fact that CD Projekt RED removed third-person gameplay is pretty common knowledge at this point.

Here’s a quote from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier (via TheGamer) regarding its removal: “If you're wondering just how much Cyberpunk 2077 changed over the past decade: well, up until 2016, it was a third-person game. Features that were originally envisioned (wall-running, flying cars, car ambushes) were cut along the way (not atypical in game development).”

Now that Update 2.3 for Cyberpunk 2077 is on the way, which is assumedly the last update for the game, fans just can’t help but wonder if CD Projekt RED is going to add a third-person mode back into the game.

In fact, someone directly asked the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account about this. Here’s what they had to say.

“Hey! We'll be sharing more details about what's included in Update 2.3 closer to release (stay tuned!)”, replied @CyberpunkGame.

“That said, as we've stated before, the scope for Update 2.3 is similar to that of Update 2.2.”

Well, that’s certainly not a no, I guess? But what do the folks over on the r/cyberpunkgame think of the chances?

They think it’s close to impossible.

“Extremely unlikely as third person mode would be an extreme amount of work”, commented user satanfurry.

“Whatever they may add there's two things I'm sure they're never adding; third person and flying vehicles”, replied user bruce_dapples.

Personally, I think it’s also unlikely… but I do think the reply from the official Cyberpunk 2077 account is kind of weird.

I get that they don’t want to ruin the surprise, and they can’t be spending their entire day shooting down rumours on Twitter, but a simple “no” would have sufficed here.

Instead, that reply might be filling people with false hope.

After all, Update 2.2 was massive. If, as they stated, Update 2.3 is comparable, adding something like a third-person mode doesn’t sound out of the realm of possibility.

Guess we’ll just have to wait and see…
