Resident Evil reboot leaves fans seriously concerned

What else is new?

A recent update may leave Resident Evil fans concerned, but this news may not be much of a surprise to veteran devotees of the series.

The Resident Evil series is one of the most popular video game properties of all time, ever since Capcom launched the very first game in 1996 on the original PlayStation.

Resident Evil Requiem is the next game in the series and will be released early next year on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Fans are hyped to get their hands on Resident Evil Requiem, which will see players return to the nuked and once zombie-infested Raccoon City for the first time in 30 in-game years (not including remakes and spin-offs).

However, Resident Evil Requiem is not the only new release we’re getting in 2026, because we’re also getting another movie reboot, this time directed by Zach Cregger, the director of the 2022 horror production, Barbarian.

As picked up by Comic Book Resources, when talking to SFX Magazine, Zach Cregger told fans not to expect his Resident Evil movie reboot to be a completely faithful adaptation.

Which, to be fair, none of the Paul W. S. Anderson Resident Evil movies were faithful, and they weren't good movies at all, despite them making silly money at the box office.

The 2021 movie, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, was more faithful but was still pants, and don’t even get me started on that woeful live-action Netflix series, cancelled after just one season.

So, the moral of the story is, as of right now, it doesn't matter whether a Resident Evil adaptation is completely faithful or not; we fans have had to make do with utter turd, but hopefully, Zach Cregger is the one who will finally get it right.

“I am a gigantic Resident Evil game fan. I've played them all. I don't know how many times I've just looped [RE4] again and again,” Cregger told SFX Magazine.

“I just love it. I'm definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games; I'm trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games.

“I don't think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognise that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online,” he continued.

“All I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that's compelling. I know that I'm gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.”

Barbarian is a fantastic movie, so I am willing to give Zach Creggar the benefit of the doubt. I just hope we don’t get burned again.

The next Resident Evil movie reboot is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 18 September 2026. As for Resident Evil Requiem, that will be released on 27 February 2026.
