Steam’s latest indie game hit is a perfect dose of nostalgia for those who played GoldenEye 007 back in the day.
Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a spiritual successor to the original GoldenEye game on Nintendo 64, with fans of the classic FPS able to jump in and play alone or with a group of friends.
Complete with low-poly graphics and a simple pick-up-and-play style, Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a throwback to the 1990s with many features that anyone who grew up in that era will recognise.
In Agent 64’s singleplayer campaign, you play as Secret Agent John Walter, an elite operative tasked with saving the world from his evil arch-nemesis, Dominic Pulp.

These missions take place across a variety of different locations, including skyscrapers, nightclubs, museums, catacombs, and snow bases.
Outside of the singleplayer, the game also has a 4-player co-operative model which allows you to bring in your friends in both split-screen and online cooperative modes. Outside of that, you can also play versus multiplayer in a variety of different kinds of deathmatches.
Online multiplayer is played in 8-player lobbies, but you can also add bots into the mix to spice things up, with fully lobby customisation that allows you to change the rules for teams, scoring, and modifiers.
Multiplayer modes include a classic deathmatch, where you need to score more kills to win, Zone, which essentially functions like a King of the Hill mode, and Briefcase where you need to capture and hold the titular briefcase for as long as possible to score points.
There’s also a bonus challenge mode, which is a series of special matches against pre-set bots where every player must reach a precise score in a certain amount of time.

Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a perfect spiritual successor to games like GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark
Altogether, the game certainly has all the DNA of classics like GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark, which makes it perfect for fans of those shooters, or other FPS games from that period.
If you especially wanted to jazz things up, there’s also a bonus modifier feature called Paradox Mode which introduces a load of new things you can change. This includes Melee Disarms, Slow Bullet Speeds, and No Reload which should spice things up.
Yes, that also means the return of Big Head mode, a staple of the N64 era.
The reviews for Agent 64: Spies Never Die have also been very positive. One day after release, the game has a 90% positive rating on Steam, based on 218 reviews (as of writing).
“For all of those disappointed by PD's cancellation. Agent 64 brings it back to the N64,” reads one user review.
“If you want Microsoft and Rare to get a clue and release their classics on Steam buy this and support the golden age of N64 shooters,” reads another review.
And this particular one made me giggle: “It's rare that we see a game with such a perfect, dark atmosphere. The developer has a golden eye for detail.”
Agent 64: Spies Never Die is available to purchase now on Steam.
