Somebody Bought A $650,000 Yacht NFT, Instead Of Buying A Real One

This is The Sandbox, and it only gets worse the more you read about it.

Cool. The Metaflower Super Mega Yacht, which is not a real yacht, has been sold for about $650,000, pushing it to become the most expensive NFT asset in something called The Sandbox.

Currently in alpha, The Sandbox is a metaverse project, or in the words of the creators, “an open multi-week Play-to-Earn event.” I don’t know what that means either. There are 18 individual experiences that backers are able to enjoy inside The Sandbox, though if you shell out for an Alpha Pass, you’ll get access to all of them as well as the opportunity to earn 1,000 $SAND and three exclusive NFT rewards. Regular players only get access to three of the experiences and aren’t able to earn Play-to-Earn rewards.

Cryptocurrency is filled with success stories - like this guy who forgot the password to his hard drive holding $240 million.

It’s easy to roll your eyes at this sort of stuff. Very easy. I’m doing it right now. However, The Sandbox has raised over $90 million in investments with more than 165 brands, IPs and artists like Snoop Dogg, DeadMau5, Avenged Sevenfold, The Walking Dead, Smurfs, Manchester City, Square Enix, Atari and so on. So, is it too surprising to find out that some rich kid has snapped up a (not real) yacht in this metaverse? It's a hot property after all.

You can take a look at the yacht for yourself here - it boasts four stories with two helipads, multiple lounge areas, a jacuzzi and a DJ booth and dance floor. I cannot fathom the thought process that brought one person to sink $650,000 on a yacht that doesn’t exist. Sure, there’s a jacuzzi, but you can’t enjoy the jacuzzi. It’s only for your digital avatar. I mean, I suppose it’s analogous to The Sims in that way, but at least The Sims is actually fun.
