Xbox players have been warned that while future consoles aren’t dead, there will be “big changes”, according to a new report.

Ever since the reveal of the ROG Xbox Ally and the recent Microsoft layoffs, there’s been a lot of speculation about the future of the Xbox platform.

Many gamers seem to believe that the consoles are “dead”, and that future Xbox platforms will be relegated to PCs and similar types of hardware.

Now, the hardware experts over at Digital Foundry have presented their take on this.

According to a new video posted on their YouTube channel, Xbox will still be developing hardware and new consoles, but the next generation will undergo “big changes” (thanks, PureXbox).

“We see this in the Windows space with Surface devices, where Microsoft participates in the Windows ecosystem but they're not necessarily the only players in that ecosystem - they are one of many players in the ecosystem,” says Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie.

“The Xbox, traditionally with the last four generations of hardware, has been a pretty strong vision. Here is an Xbox Series X, we're going to support it for a generation. It has a console OS, it has exclusive games, it will go toe-to-toe with PlayStation with competitive pricing. This isn't that, or at least to some degree it's not that - in significant ways it's not that vision.”

It seems like the existence of the ROG Xbox Ally has caused this speculation, with some feeling like this means that future Xbox hardware is going to look more like PCs rather than the traditional console systems we’ve seen in the past.

Of course, be sure to take all this with a grain of salt. This is pure speculation on Digital Foundry’s part, and we won’t truly know what the next generation looks like until we’re there.

As for when the next generation of consoles could land, it could be a matter of only a few years away. With the PS6 rumoured to only be a few years away, it could be we’re all playing next-gen games within the next 24 months.
