Once more with feeling.

Sony has filed a new trademark in the US, and it appears to give us some further clues as to what the PlayStation 5's new DualSense controller can do. The trademark, which was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office earlier this month, is for the phrase "Heighten Your Senses".

Digging a little deeper, the application specifies that the trademark is related to "controllers for game consoles; game controllers for computer games." It seems a safe bet then, that it's referring to the DualSense controller and all of the new features that have built in to make for more immersive gameplay experiences.

The PS5 DualSense controller.

We've already heard a few promising things about the DualSense controller. It'll have a light bar and built in speakers like its predecessor, as you'd expect... but Sony has been a little more ambitious with its next-gen offering. This is where haptic feedback comes in.

In a statement when the controller was first announced, Sony wrote: "Based on our discussions with developers, we concluded that the sense of touch within gameplay, much like audio, hasn't been a big focus for many games.

"We had a great opportunity with PS5 to innovate by offering game creators the ability to explore how they can heighten that feeling of immersion through our new controller. This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you'll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud."

Last month, a developer also teased that the controller will have built-in features that allow you to feel environmental effects such as falling rain. That sounds pretty rad, and I can't wait to see how exactly such a feature would work. All of this would really help the PlayStation 5 to stand out, of course... so I can definitely see Sony bigging the controller up through the "Heighten Your Senses" slogan.

I'm really quite excited to see what developers will be able to do with this controller. For example, what if Insomniac Games was able to find a way to bring a tactile sensation to swinging through the city in Spider-Man: Miles Morales? What if you could feel the rain and snow in Horizon Forbidden West. What if you felt every death in the Demons Souls remake?

Okay maybe not that last one. That'd probably hurt a little too much. Still, you see what I'm saying? There's some serious potential there.
