It took close to a month, but the PlayStation 5 will now alert you if you're about to play the PlayStation 4 version of a game.
The warning, first spotted by Twitter user @Tidux, appears when you attempt to play a last-gen version of a game when the PS5 version is also available. This would apply to various cross-gen titles such a Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The message also provides players with the option to switch the PS5 version if they want... though I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to.

This sounds like a tiny feature, but the fact it was missing when the next-gen console launched last month makes this a big deal. One of the most common complaints about the PS5 around launch was that it was needlessly tricky to tell which version of a game you were downloading.
In many instances, the PlayStation Store would automatically download the last-gen version of a game onto the new hardware without notifying the player clearly of which version was being played. I know more than a few gamers who were wondering why their PS5 version of Black Ops Cold War didn't as good as they'd expected, only for them to discover they'd been playing the PS4 version the entire time.
I had the same issue with Assassin's Creed Valhalla, only realising my console had automatically installed the PS4 version once it had downloaded, and I only knew to check because I'd heard other people had the same issue. It seemed like a pretty major oversight at the time, so it's great to see someone at Sony heard our complaints loud and clear.
With this new feature in place, hopefully Christmas day will go a lot smoother for any gamers out there who are getting a PlayStation 5 and already own a few cross-gen games.
