Star Wars: Underworld prequel series plans revealed, featuring Darth Maul

We could have had it all

We have been spoiled over the years when it comes to the various Star Wars projects we have received since the original movies were released.

However, it is easy to forget that many projects have been scrapped during development and that was most certainly the case for Star Wars: Underworld.

If it had been released, Underworld would have taken place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope and would have explored stories based in and around Coruscant, especially those of a more criminal variety.

However, when Lucasfilm was bought by the Walt Disney Company back in 2012, a lot of changes were made to the future of the Star Wars franchise which also included Star Wars: Underworld getting cancelled.

Underworld was first announced way back in 2005 and was set to consist of multiple episodes across many seasons.

In an interview on the Young Indy Chroniclers podcast earlier this year, Rick McCallum, a producer at Lucasfilm, spoke more about how far Underworld actually made it into development.

"There was a period where people thought we weren't doing anything. And we spent five years doing over 60 scripts, some reaching third drafts, with the most wonderful writers in the world on them," he revealed.

"These stories were dark. But they were sexy, they were violent, they made you think, and they were just absolutely wonderful."

Overall, up to 60 scripts were written for Star Wars: Underworld and would have included multiple exciting plots such as: the early years of the Empire under the leadership of Palpatine, an appearance from Boba Fett, and most excitedly, a final duel between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul in Coruscant.

As you can imagine, these would have been some epic moments to explore but unfortunately, it would never come to be.

However, with multiple Star Wars projects taking place each year, who knows? Maybe Star Wars: Underworld will be picked back up one day in the future.
