A new reports suggests that Call Of Duty 2020 may see the return of one of the more popular modes from Call Of Duty: Black Ops IIII. According to VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, developer Treyarch plans to bring back Blackout - the battle royale mode that was introduced the 2018 Black Ops title.

For those that missed Black Ops IIII, Blackout was Call Of Duty's first stab at the battle royale genre. It was also, actually, really bloody good. It's not entirely clear how its return would work, given Infinity Ward and Activision have long-term plans to support the free-to-play battle royale Warzone.

Of course, Blackout was never free-to-play, so it's likely its return in Call Of Duty 2020 would simply be as a dedicated mode for the upcoming title. Presumably it would offer an experience similar to Warzone, but with enough differences that the two had their own distinct reasons for being.

There's also the possibility that elements of Blackout could simply be incorporated into Warzone, so as to tie the free-to-play battle royale into the next Call Of Duty. According to multiple reports, the new game will be a reboot of the Black Ops franchise called Black Ops Cold War, so it'd make sense for Warzone to get a makeover.

Indeed, players have already come across numerous hints in the battle royale that something major is coming. Mysterious coded messages. Bunkers containing unarmed nukes. Howling wolves at various points across the map. Could we possibly be heading towards an event that will change up the entire map? Well... probably, yeah.

One well-known Call Of Duty leaker also suggested last month that Warzone will likely get a Cold War-style makeover to tie in with the upcoming game. TheGamingRevolution claims that the battle royale will be getting a new map in late 2020, presumably to tie-in with the launch of Black Ops Cold War.

However Blackout factors into the next Call Of Duty, Infinity Ward has already said that there are plenty of mysteries left to solve in Verdansk. There's just no Warzone is going anywhere, then.

"Players have already discovered that there is a whole other part of Verdansk they haven't seen yet," narrative director Taylor Kurosaki teased. "They have found clues, and that there is more than meets the eye in this city. Season 4 will unravel some of those mysteries and unlock some of them for our players."

Season 4 is expected to arrive tomorrow, after Infinity Ward and Activision delayed the update out of respect for the Black Lives Matter protests taking place across America.
