'Assassin's Creed Valhalla' Gets Brutal, Bloody First Trailer

Norsing around.

Ubisoft has dropped a stunning new CG trailer for the recently announced Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and it might just be the most violent the classic franchise has ever looked.

To be clear, this is a series that's pretty much all about killing people, so it's always been pretty rough... but if this trailer is anything to go by, the vikings are taking Assassin's Creed to gory new heights. But don't take my word for it - see for yourself below. Gore or no gore, I have to say: this is a really, really cool reveal.

Right? Right? If you weren't excited before, I'd hope that stunning footage got your motor revving a little. However, it's worth reminding you all once again that this is just a CG reveal. A proper look at gameplay is yet to come, but I can't imagine it'll disappoint. Besides, we can probably glean a few clues as to what's to come from this trailer.

For a start, it looks like sailing will be making a comeback. Exploring the waters of Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey was a real high point, so I look forward to setting out across the sea with a merry band of vikings. I'm also anticipating more large-scale brawls and brutal combat. Oh, and it looks like the hidden blade is back! Not exactly sure how that can be, but I'm excited to find out.

Valhalla also looks like it wants to challenge our preconceptions about the vikings - namely that they were mindless brutes who only ever pillaged and murdered. It remains to be seen how successfully the game will achieve this, but my least-favourite part of the trailer by far was the massively clunky moment where we see a viking let a woman and child escape while burning down the rest of their village. Yeah, you guys are saints. Hopefully the full game is a wee bit more nuanced than that.

In other Valhalla news, it sounds like this really could be Ubisoft's biggest game to date. According to lead developer Ubisoft Montréal, the studio has worked with 14 other developers on this title. For context, the massive Assassin's Creed Odyssey had the help of ten other studios.
