The PlayStation 5 is now finally available around most of the world, but as with any major hardware launch, there have been issues. Beyond the numerous orders that have either been delayed or have otherwise simply gone missing, we're also hearing about a potential hardware issue that only seems to rear its head during more graphically intensive games.

As reported by PlayStation Universe, one of the more prominent complaints about the new system is a "coil whine" that occurs during games like Demon's Souls and God Of War, the latter of which had a pretty significant upgrade ahead of the next-gen launch.

It doesn't seem to be a major issue, but it's something that users are currently very wary of. It's so prominent right now, in fact, that there's actually a ResetEra thread where various PS5 owners are sharing their own experience with the coil whine, along with speculation as to what might causing it.

"So I start up God of War, and I hear an uptick in the pitch and sound level," writes psychotron. "Still not bad but a slight difference. So I decide to give it an actual PS5 game to test, which was Astro's Playroom. As soon as I got to the part where you swipe the touchpad to shoot Astro out, the system buzzing got loud. I could hear a constant "bzzzzzzzzzzz" coming from the PS5. It sounded just like Pro coil whine, only louder.

"I went to the Home Screen and the noise immediately stopped. Back to the game and it was buzzing again."

Others have documented the same issue over on Reddit and YouTube, although nobody seems entirely sure as to what's going on. Fortunately, this doesn't seem to be much than a "faint buzzing" for anyone at the time of writing, but after all that work Sony did ensuring the PS5 fan would stay quiet, it would be a real shame if it was simply replaced with a completely different noise.

I should also point out that this soon after a console launch, we're always going to see an influx of reported hardware failures. That doesn't mean these issues are widespread or that they're anything to be too concerned about, it just means that the people who are dealing with these hardware issues have all come to the same place to talk about it and try get it sorted out.

As long as this particular problem doesn't become anything more than a slight whine, hopefully it doesn't affect people too badly. Then again, the PS5 is only just getting started and more graphically demanding games are yet to come, so we'll have to wait and see. I choose to hope for the best though.
