Nintendo has announced an exciting new range of freebies to celebrate the release of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

Super Mario’s next cinematic outing drops today but so the critic reviews have painted an ominous picture of the film’s quality.

From lacklustre Easters Eggs to an underutilised main cast, early impressions are not favourable by any means, and the film’s overall reception could have big implications on the future of Nintendo’s cinematic universe.

Fortunately we’ll still have the Super Mario Galaxy games, which were re-released last year for the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

Some Nintendo Switch Online freebies for the games were released earlier today by Nintendo to celebrate the film’s release, but an even more exciting drop is one fans will definitely want to check out throughout the week.

Collect ‘Em All

To celebrate The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s cinematic debut Nintendo users who have the Nintendo Today app downloaded can collect a wide variety of digital trading cards.

These collectible cards are directly inspired by the film, rather than the latest wave of Nintendo Switch Icons which borrow artwork from the games.

New The Super Mario Galaxy Movie collectible cards have been added to Nintendo Today! You can see which cards you’ve collected so far in a list view.

In the brief teaser Nintendo provided you can see some of the film’s main cast in addition to side characters, items, enemies and locations seen in the film, all of which have been gloriously packaged into digital cards.

A new card can be acquired every day, every time you load up the Nintendo Today app.

Despite lacking any monetary value like Pokémon cards, these digital collectibles are still ludicrously cute and a nice way to celebrate the film’s release, even if the reviews are pretty scathing so far.

If anything these cards are screaming for a physical release, though perhaps borrowing more from the Super Mario video games rather than the Illumination movies.

Nintendo could even revisit some of its old practices, like the infamous Animal Crossing Amiibo cards which ultimately failed to live up to the same hype the plastic figures did.

If new Amiibo cards covered more well-known and well-regarded series however like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and more perhaps they’d go down better with fans. Although they’d need to have at least some functionality with some of the latest Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games.

That’s something for the future though. For the here and now be sure to check out the Nintendo Today app and start collecting your freebies while you can.
