PlayStation users are urged to save big on PS5 purchases before the next price hike comes into effect.
Last month, Sony announced yet again that the PlayStation 5 is getting another price hike, which also includes the handheld PS Portal.
Granted, consoles are a bit smaller and slimmer nowadays, but a PlayStation 5 with a disc drive at launch cost £449.99 and the digital-only console, £359.99. Today, the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive costs £479.99 and without, £429.99.
The newly announced Sony price hikes will now see the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive jump to a whopping £569.99, the digital-only to £519.99 and the PS5 Pro jumping from £699.99 to £789.99. And no, the Pro version still doesn't come with a disc drive or vertical stand.
As brought to our attention by Reddit user tormotx, they reminded everyone that the online PlayStation Direct store is selling refurbished PS5 consoles with a massive discount. Sure, these consoles aren't brand new and have been used. However, they have been checked over by Sony and come with a one-year warranty.

The Reddit user highlighted the fact that, rather than buying a slim PlayStation 5 with a disc drive for $649.99 when the next price hike is in play, you can buy a refurbished console right now for just $399.99, which is a massive saving.
Of course, when the next PlayStation 5 price hikes are implemented, the refurbished consoles will also likely increase. That being said, they should still be significantly cheaper than a brand-new machine. So, that’s something worth keeping in mind.
From the PlayStation Direct website, an older model of the PlayStation 5 with a disc drive costs £389.99 and £339.99 for the digital-only.
However, it might be worth holding out, because the slim versions are the same price as the older models; they’re just not available to buy yet. At the time of writing, a refurbished PlayStation 5 Pro isn't listed either, but it will be interesting to see how much that would sell for.

It all depends on what you choose to believe. We’ve heard the reasons being a shortage of GPU, Donald Trump's tariffs (which should only impact the US, but it doesn't) and general inflation.
I think there’s a little bit of truth in each excuse. But more than anything else, I believe it’s mostly due to corporations continually competing with internal year-on-year targets.
In all my years of gaming, never have I ever known a console generation to get more expensive the older it gets, at least to this extent. Typically, as we’ve seen up to the last generation of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as we edge closer to the next-gen, older consoles drop in price before consumers' attention is turned by the shiny new toy.
So, if you have an opportunity to purchase any video game console cheaper than the standard RRP, whether it's PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo, make that purchase ASAP before you regret it.
