Careful what you say, Phil.

Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft's Xbox division, has said that The Elder Scrolls 6 doesn't need to come to PlayStation 5 in order for Microsoft to make the ZeniMax deal worth the $7.5 billion. In an interview with Kotaku Spencer says that buying ZeniMax, the parent company to Bethesda and id Software, wasn't done to take games away from other players, but Microsoft doesn't need to ship the upcoming Elder Scrolls game on PlayStation to make the deal profitable.

The interviewer asks Spencer if it's possible to recoup the $7.5 billion investment if they don't offer the game on PlayStations and Spencer responds with yes and then goes on to say, "this deal was not done to take games away from another player base like that. Nowhere in the documentation that we put together was: 'How do we keep other players from playing these games?' We want more people to be able to play games, not fewer people to be able to go play games.

"But I'll also say in the model-I'm just answering directly the question that you had-when I think about where people are going to be playing and the number of devices that we had, and we have xCloud and PC and Game Pass and our console base, I don't have to go ship those games on any other platform other than the platforms that we support in order to kind of make the deal work for us. Whatever that means."

So, what we can all take from that is that The Elder Scrolls 6 still hangs in the balance. We know that those with the Xbox Series X will definitely get to play the next game in the series, but for PlayStation players, we simply have no indication if it will ever reach the console. We'd like to think it will arrive eventually, but timed exclusivity or Xbox exclusivity and more variables could all change how PlayStation fans may see Skyrim's successor.
