Assassin's Creed: The Fall & The Chain takes the series to 19th century Russia

A spin-off Assassin’s Creed story took Ubisoft’s flagship series to Russia, and it really needs to be adapted into a game.

Ubisoft seriously struck gold with Assassin’s Creed, turning the series into a time-travelling, globe-trotting adventure with nearly endless possibilities for times and locations.

Take a look at the gameplay for Assassin’s Creed Mirage below, which releases later this year

We’ve seen stories in Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, The Caribbean Age of Piracy, and the French Revolution to name a few. There are still so many untouched points in time left for the series to explore, and we’re hoping for a full-game set sometime during Russia’s history.

Russia has popped up in the series before, albeit briefly, during the spin-off title Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: Russia and the comic-book Assassin’s Creed: The Fall & The Chain, the latter being the topic of today’s discussion.

Written by Cameron Stewart and Karl Kerschl, The Fall & The Chain follows a new protagonist, Daniel Cross, who “has vivid hallucinations of a past life; that of Nicolai Orelov, a Russian Assassin living in the early 20th Century” The story follows “Daniel's rise and fall through the ranks of the Assassin Brotherhood, and his subsequent rise through the ranks of the Templars.”

It’s a good read, scoring favourable reviews from fans, and worth a look if you’re interested in the wider lore of the Assassin’s Creed series.

As fun as it is to read about another assassin and their Russian escapades, it’d be a hell of a lot better if we could play instead. Like I said earlier there was an Assassin’s Creed game set in Russia but it was just a spin-off, and more like a 2D platformer rather than the explorable open-world games we’ve grown accustomed to.

A revisit is definitely in order, especially one that gives us complete freedom of traversal over Russia’s beautiful architecture.

It’s currently unknown if an AC trip to Russia is on the cards or not for future releases, but given how Ubisoft are going all-in on the series with several projects in the pipeline, it’s definitely a possibility. Unfortunately, Ubisoft’s commitment to its flagship franchise has come at the cost of its other IPs, like Immortals Fenyx Rising which recently had its sequel cancelled.

Assassin’s Creed: The Fall & The Chain can currently be purchased on Amazon, either has a physical copy or an E-book.
