A new company update from Ubisoft has left Assassin’s Creed fans disappointed, as the future of the series is up in the air.

Yesterday, on 16 July, Ubisoft announced that Christophe Derennes and Charlie Guillemot would become co-CEOs of the company’s new subsidiary, which will be focused on the Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and Assassin’s Creed series.

Although details are still pretty light, the subsidiary was announced back in March with a “focus on building brand ecosystems capable of becoming evergreen, billion-euro franchises”.

Derennes said: “Our long-term objective with this new subsidiary is to grow these iconic brands — while remaining loyal to their DNA — into experiences that are constantly enriching and surprising to our players.”

Naturally, this announcement has set off some alarm bells with Assassin’s Creed fans, who feel that Ubisoft is due a change in leadership if the series is to survive.

This has been largely down to some of Ubisoft’s more recent game releases selling poorly, such as Skull and Bones, which apparently sold “less than a quarter of Sea of Thieves’ launch” of boxed copies. The game had a troubled 11-year development cycle, which severely inflated costs alleged to be somewhere between $650 to $850 Million.

Ubisoft stock has also been steadily dropping over the years. In January 2021, stocks were estimated to be around 85 points. A year later, this went down to around 52 points, and in January 2025 Ubisoft stock had dropped as low as 11 points.

“Evergreen content sure sounds a lot like live service,” one comment on the Gaming News Reddit page reads. “Tencent keeps gaining more control over more studios. Nepotism. I don’t know. I like Ubisoft games… fingers crossed.”

“It was kind of a pipe dream to imagine the Guillemot family would ever let this bone go, huh?” another comment reads.

“As always, I have zero faith in Ubisoft but who knows maybe I am wrong,” a third comment reads.

Guillemot and Derennes have said that the new subsidiary will officially launch once the leadership team has been built out. So, for now it’s still business as usual until this occurs.
