Immortals Fenyx Rising sequel cancelled by Ubisoft to focus on Assassin's Creed

Assassin’s Creed studio Ubisoft has reportedly cancelled a highly anticipated sequel for Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Assassin’s Creed studio Ubisoft has reportedly cancelled a highly anticipated sequel for Immortals Fenyx Rising.

Fans hoping for a continuation of the Immortals Fenyx Rising series will likely be disappointed to know that Ubisoft have no plans to revisit the series with a new game, at least for the time being.

Reports from VGC state that a sequel was in early development, but has since been scrapped due to "challenges around establishing the IP."

Released in 2020 for Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and PC platforms, Immortals Fenyx Rising is an open-world action adventure-game themed around Greek mythology, much like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which directly inspired it. The game follows the demigod Fenyx who embarks on a quest to save the Greek Pantheon by defeating Typhon, a Titan who’s imprisoned them.

In terms of gameplay, it’s heavily inspired by Zelda: Breath of the Wild, complete with the ability to climb almost anything, glide across the map, and upgrade your abilities with collectables scattered around each area.

Commercial and critical response to the game was overwhelmingly positive, leading many to assume sequels were on the way, which was supposedly the case before it eventually faced cancellation. It’s unknown what the sequel would have been like, and whether it would have stuck with the Greek mythology theme or explored other cultures.

The decision to cancel the sequel to Immortals reportedly comes from Ubisoft’s plans to focus on the Assassin’s Creed series, which has several projects planned for release over the next few years, including the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

It’s a disappointment to say the least, as there was a lot of potential for Immortals to become a flagship franchise for Ubisoft going forward, potentially rivalling the success of the Assassin’s Creed series.

That being said, one should never say never, as a sequel could remerge at some point in the future, hopefully with a new twist to capture the attention of Fenyx Rising fans and new audiences alike.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is currently available on Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo and PC platforms.
