Xbox Series Consoles Outsell PlayStation 5 Amidst Stock Shortages

The latest sales data coming out of Japan has confirmed that ongoing stock shortages have seen the PlayStation 5 once again outsold by the Xbox Series X/S.

As per data from Famitsu (via VGC), Microsoft's home consoles have sold more than double the number of units as the PS5 in Japan. In the last week the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series X sold 3,272 and 3,423 units respectively. Sony's new-gen console managed 2,371 (Standard) and 664 (Digital).

Unsurprisingly, it looks as if these sales figures come down to simple stock issues. The PlayStation brand has historically always done much better in Japan compared to Xbox. Sure enough, just last week PS5 (Standard and Digital) managed to sell 12,440 compared to a combined X/S sales of 6,242.

Supply issues continue to hamper the PS5, which launched back in 2020. However, a recent report suggests that shipments of the console are set to increase as the components shortage finally begins to ease up.

DigiTimes reports that PS5 shipments may see a boost in the second half of this year and into 2023, which hopefully means it'll be much easier to get hold of the console in time for Christmas.

There are also whispers that Sony is prepping a new, more powerful PS5 to launch in the not-so-distant future. According to new rumours shared by RedGamingTech on YouTube, a PS5 Pro is coming in 2024. This enhanced model will apparent come with even more impressive specs than the standard PS5, boasting enhanced performance, slicker resolutions, a better experience for PSVR/PSVR 2 titles, and massively improved ray-tracing.

This all lines up with previous reports shared by fellow YouTuber Moore's Law Is Dead Law Is Dead, who claimed last year that the PS5 Pro will most likely release in 2024 for around £600-£700. Watch this space.
