Crimson Desert is playable for free from your PC browser, no download required

Crimson Desert is easily one of this year’s GOTY contenders, alongside Resident Evil Requiem, Pokémon Pokopia, The Blood of Dawnwalker, Big Walk, Mina The Hollower, and 007 First Light.

And that’s just to name a few of the year’s standout titles, with many AAA heavy hitters still to come - including Grand Theft Auto VI.

As for Crimson Desert, it was one of the first GOTY contenders to surface, but the developers at Pearl Abyss are cleverly making sure that it isn’t forgotten about almost six months on from launch.

At Gamescom’s Opening Night Live, a new version of the title was recently announced, Crimson Desert: Enhanced Edition, with the new content shadowdropped as a free update for existing users.

Developers have now followed that up by launching a brand new free playable demo for Crimson Desert - and it’s a demo that you don’t even need to download.

On PC, you can now sample Crimson Desert free of charge directly from your browser allowing for instant access.

Pearl Abyss notes that “experience may vary by region and internet speed” but you shouldn’t need the greatest kit in the world to get the demo working.

In fact, I’ve just opened it up from a MacBook Pro which I ordinarily wouldn’t use for gaming.

As such, it should be accessible to pretty much all gamers and if you do end up wanting to purchase the game, there’s nothing stopping you from doing so on console instead; this is merely the quickest way to now try Crimson Desert out for yourself.

The demo offers 20 minutes of gameplay and that’s based on a timer.

It skips the opening of the game and instead, drops you into Hernand (the opening province) just after Kliff gets his Abyss wings.

As such, it’s totally up to you what you do within those 20 minutes as you can head off in any direction, although some key objectives are highlighted for ease if you want to get the most out of those 20 minutes.

If you don’t have a controller linked up to your PC or Mac, you’ll need to use mouse and keyboard controls, but all controls are clearly displayed in a help menu so you don’t feel like you’re totally thrown in at the deep end with limited time.

It’s a nifty little demo and it would be great to see more developers and studios offering these types of ‘instantly playable’ offerings.

A paid DLC is due to drop for Crimson Desert before 2026 is out

The demo appears to have already done its job.

“Played this demo and world is truly great,” wrote Twitter/X user pfuryexe. “So much potential.”

“Awesome! The link puts the player straight into Hernand, so there’s no need for the tutorial,” added SKY_UPz.

If you did miss that Enhanced Edition update I mentioned earlier, it essentially introduced new story content and updated language support to Crimson Desert.

In fact, many Crimson Desert players are embarking on brand new playthroughs, sharing that the updated opening of the game feels completely different.

By all accounts, the story has been made clearer thanks to new cutscenes with Kliff also made into less of a silent, dull protagonist.

As for what lies in the game’s future, a paid DLC is in development alongside a multiplayer mode.

While the DLC is scheduled to launch sometime this year, the lid is yet to be lifted on the project.
