Crimson Desert is easily a contender for the 2026 Game of the Year, even with the looming threat of Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon.
In terms of open-world games, it practically knows no equal. It’s massive and gamers are still trying to uncover all of its secrets.
This exploration keeps getting halted and extended by all of the new updates Pearl Abyss has been dropping in the meantime, with a more substantial DLC expansion currently in the works for a later date.

While you wait, be sure to download this awesome Random Boss Encounter mod from namintelvn, as it makes exploring the open-world ten times scarier.
The mod hardly needs much explanation as it does exactly what it says on the tin. While you’re wandering through the forests, plains and deserts of Pywel, you could randomly be set upon by one of the game’s many bosses.
It reminds us of that bit in Elden Ring where Margit will randomly materialise in front of you when you arrive at Leyndell.
Now, why you would want this is beyond us. Depending on who you ask, one of the weakest aspects of Crimson Desert is the boss battles. They’re tough, but not because they challenge you. Defeating them is usually very straightforward, though the onslaught of attacks and blinding battle effects can really throw off your tempo, at least in our experience.
Some players do quite like the bosses however. Pearl Abyss even added an update that lets you replay them should you wish.
The Random Boss Encounter is basically that, but always when you least expect it and probably when you want to do literally anything else with your time.
Fortunately, bosses have a 20% spawn rate according to the mod’s description. You’ll have a 40% chance of encountering a “Human Group (Hexe, Harpy...)” and a 50% chance of encountering an “Animal Group (Wolf, lion, bear...)”.
Should the mod get too difficult or too easy you can fine-tune it to your preference.

The Random Boss Encounter is pretty cool. We’d imagine it could lead to some humorous moments when you’re out foraging for goodies only to see Ludvig or the Crowcaller charging towards you.
You’ll find similar mods for various FromSoftware games and they’re almost always a good laugh.
That being said, we can’t imagine this is a mod you’d want to turn on for an entire playthrough, nor can we imagine it’d be fun after a few hours of interruptions.
Still, it’s new content for the game. Pearl Abyss is still releasing updates with the latest dropping today, July 16. It adds cross-save support so you can transfer your adventures between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC as you please.
The timing couldn’t be any better either with a mass exodus in the works for PlayStation.
We’re halfway through 2026 and Crimson Desert is still finding ways to pull us back to Pywel. Hopefully it can keep this momentum up as we inch closer and closer to those coveted Game Awards.
