2026’s biggest open-world game, Crimson Desert, is getting a major DLC expansion, which the developers teased in a recent update.
After a rocky start, Crimson Desert is finally the Game of the Year contender many hoped it would be. Despite its grandeur, opinions have been oddly divided, and yet on a technical level, you can’t argue that the title isn’t impressive.
The last few updates have been all about bug-fixing and quality-of-life improvements, with a bit of fun stuff sprinkled in for good measure. One of the future updates though, will be major story DLC, which could go head-to-head with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt’s upcoming expansion.
Witcher fans will have no doubt heard The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is getting another expansion in 2027, over a decade since the game first came out.
Songs of the Past will be a new tale starring Geralt of Rivia that’ll seemingly tie directly into the events of The Witcher IV.

Crimson Desert’s future DLC could rival it though, with Pearl Abyss saying in a recent dev update: “We are also hard at work on an upcoming DLC for Crimson Desert, and while we cannot share the details just yet, we are preparing it as a meaningful addition to your journey.”

Nothing more was said on the matter, nor do we have any idea of when we might see the DLC for ourselves. From the sound of things, though it’s a new development, so don’t expect a reveal anytime soon.
The question now is what on Earth could a Crimson Desert expansion possibly be? The base game’s map is already huge and there’s loads to do in terms of exploration and side-quests. Most players haven’t even passed the halfway point of Crimson Desert’s story because they’re too busy getting sidetracked.
A new region sounds a little too optimistic but you never know. In all likelihood, it’ll be a new storyline set somewhere players have already visited in Pywel.
The Witcher III players likely will explore a new region, though. The expansion’s setting hasn’t been confirmed yet but the prevailing theory is that it’ll take place in Cidaris, based on the key art and existing lore.
Out of the two expansions, it seems reasonable to say players will favour The Witcher III’s offering more. It’s got an established playerbase and a new expansion for a game over 10 years old is a big deal, even for a franchise as big as The Witcher.
More info on Songs of the Past will be shared during this year’s Gamescom, which takes place in August. If we had to guess, we would know more about Crimson Desert’s expansion by the end of this year or the beginning of 2027.
