It’s finally happening: The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is getting another expansion in 2027, over a decade after it first launched.
Unfortunately, CD Projekt Red’s initial reveal didn’t go to plan as the expansion was leaked ahead of time, but it’s exciting nonetheless.
What’s more exciting though, is that the new DLC will seemingly tie directly into the events of The Witcher IV.
Ciri will presumably be the sole protagonist of The Witcher IV and while we’re adamant Geralt will pop up at some point during the game’s story, he’ll likely be there to share his wisdom rather than save the day.
Before we get there though, the White Wolf has one last challenge to face. In The Witcher III: Wild Hunt’s new expansion, Songs of the Past, it’s said: “players can once again take on the role of Geralt of Rivia and embark on a brand-new adventure before heading out on the Path as Ciri in the upcoming The Witcher 4.”

No further story details have been shared just yet but from that description alone, it’s pretty clear we’re going to get some idea of what Ciri will be getting up to in her solo outing.
We’re not expecting the events of the expansion and sequel to be days apart but we’d be very surprised if they weren’t linked in some way.
One theory floating around the internet is that Songs of the Past could be Geralt’s last hunt. Perhaps he’ll finally retire after facing whatever threat is messing with him this time, or perhaps he’ll finally bite the dust so Ciri’s new adventure can thrive without him.

It’s far too early to tell but we’ll likely know more towards the end of this year and the start of 2027.
An exact release date for Songs of the Past hasn’t been shared at the time of writing.
With this new DLC comes new system requirements for players, which is something CD Projekt Red will be working on in the months ahead.
PC players have already noticed a massive difference in what’s currently required and what will be required for the DLC, hinting at a massive new map to explore. This ties in with previous leaks and rumours, which said the expansion would take players to a brand-new continent.
CD Projekt Red will also be taking advantage of the latest hardware that wasn’t present when the game first came out.
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt launched on PC, PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One back in 2015 but with the power of new-gen consoles, Songs of the Past can be bigger and better than any of the previous expansions.
