The Witcher 3 confirms free remaster as DLC Songs of the Past drops first trailer

Gamescom has arrived and while not everyone can make it to Cologne, Germany, to join in on the fun, that’s where Opening Night Live comes in.

Geoff Keighley’s annual showcase is underway, kicking off precendings and treating gamers around the world to new reveals and updates.

As promised, The Witcher 3’s upcoming expansion Songs of the Past has just featured, with CD Projekt RED stopping by the show to drop the DLC’s first trailer.

Songs of the Past was first announced in May of this year, teasing to bridge the gap between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4 with an experience similar in size to that of Blood and Wine.

If you don’t know, the Blood and Wine expansion boasts 30 to 40 hours of content.

We already knew that Geralt would return as the game’s protagonist before handing over to Ciri in the next mainline instalment - which is confirmed to be targeting a 2028 launch window.

Now, thanks to the DLC’s first trailer, it’s clear that the story will take us to a brand new region with Geralt wielding a new weapon, a grappling chain that was apparently last seen in the opening of the original The Witcher. That's one for you lore experts to investigate.

And yes, you heard us correctly. We're venturing off to a brand new region, Letten, instead of retreading old ground. The forested locale is said to hold many secrets, with Geralt needing to uncover a supernatural mystery that lies at the very centre of Letten.

Along the way, he'll need to fend off beasts, help out NPCs, explore, and engage in all of the usual Witcher fare with more news dropping on REDstreams in the coming days as Gamescom progresses.

As for a release date, that still hasn’t been announced with Songs of the Past coming in 2027 to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The DLC is not coming to Nintendo Switch despite The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt being playable on that platform.

CD Projekt RED also surprised us all by unveiling a brand new remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt which is set to land next month on September 29th.

The unexpected remaster follows a previous new-gen update for The Witcher 3 which was, admittedly, the last many of us thought we'd hear of the game.

The remaster will be free to all existing owners of the title and let me tell you, it boasts tons of new content.

Players can look forward to enhanced combat, improved traversal and movement, revamped mount handling, enhanced monster behaviours, an expanded skill tree, an improved photo mode, new finishers, "and so much more".

The improvements apply to both the base game and pre-existing expansions Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone. The improvements will carry over into Songs of the Past too.

Can you believe that's not all? Those aforementioned DLC, Blood and Wine and Hearts of Stone, are also now officially free for all players allowing everyone to catch up with the full breadth of Geralt's story.

Between the remaster next month, the new expansion next year, and The Witcher 4 in 2028, The Witcher fans are feasting well.
