The Witcher 3 confirms Songs of the Past DLC will be locked for millions of users

Despite being over a decade in the waiting, Geralt's final chapter as the protagonist of The Witcher games won't be the easy free DLC that we're all gearing up for, as the Songs of the Past story will be locked behind new PC requirements.

The Witcher 3 stands tall as one of the greatest RPGs to play today, even at its ripe old age, having passed the test of time.

With two exemplary DLCs in Blood and Wine and Heart of Stone, players continue to grind the decade-old game and put its endless game-changing decisions into practice: Triss or Yen, witcher or Empress, Redania supporter or king-killer.

Yet with The Witcher 4 moving on from Geralt and joining Ciri on the path (semi-canonising her choice to snub Emhyr and the throne in Vizima), the White Wolf is getting one last story at the helm.

However, PC players might be locked out of the Songs of the Past DLC, as CD Projekt RED confirms that it will not be available on Windows 10.

The Witcher 3 DLC requirements confirmed

In a statement to GameRant, CD Projekt RED has confirmed that the upcoming Songs of the Past DLC for The Witcher 3 will not be available for download on Windows 10.

While the current version of Cyberpunk 2077 (2.31) and The Witcher 3 (4.04) still run on Windows 10 as of July 2026, the new update will require its players to have Windows 11 installed.

Having originally launched on Windows 7 in 2015, the May 2024 updates to The Witcher 3 resulted in PCs needing at least Windows 10, and two years later, the support for that version will be left behind again.

CD Projekt RED could roll out its new PC requirements for Cyberpunk 2077 too, as its 2026 update coinciding with Season 2 of Edgerunners might also be targeted for Windows 11 only, given Microsoft's support for this version starting to be wrapped up.

The move is projected to affect around 7 million of The Witcher 3 players, according to the GameRant report, with around one-in-nine players having used Windows 10 in their last playthrough.

The biggest reason for this change is that Microsoft plans to support Windows 10 with security patches until 2027, but it's not yet clear how the timeline will coincide with Songs of the Past, and CD Projekt RED will want to ensure all users are playing on a supported platform.

Any Windows 10 players need not worry, though, as a simple update will move you on to the current version of the OS platform, carrying over your progress on games and ongoing Microsoft projects.
