While we’re all really excited for The Witcher IV, CD Projekt Red’s latest announcement makes it abundantly clear we’re not getting it anytime soon…
The Witcher IV is going to be all about Ciri and while we’re sure Geralt will pop up at some point during the game’s story, the White Wolf will obviously be taking a backseat.
Geralt’s retirement has officially been postponed though as The Witcher III: Wild Hunt is getting another expansion. The last expansion released for The Witcher III was Blood and Wine all the way back in 2016.
It was rumoured to be in development for quite a while and thanks to an unfortunate leak, CD Projekt Red had no other choice but to announce it today. It’s called The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past and will be co-developed with Fool’s Theory.
Little has been said about the expansion’s plot but it’s scheduled for launch in 2027 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC. It’s worth noting that the PC requirements are set to change, though details on how will be shared by the studio at a later date.

That 2027 release date is pretty far away and it also unfortunately confirms that The Witcher IV will not be releasing next year.

It just wouldn’t make sense for the studio to release a massive expansion for the current Witcher game right before it drops the next.
We’re sure very few people actually expected the next Witcher game to launch next year but it could have been a possibility, as we don’t fully know how far into development the game actually is.
What we do know is CD Projekt Red is clearly taking its time which is exactly what we wanted to hear. We don’t want another Cyberpunk 2077 situation and neither does the studio itself. It’s said as much in recent interviews.
In terms of potential release dates for The Witcher IV, fans are probably looking at either late 2028 or possibly even 2029. That’s a long way off but we bet it’ll still launch before The Elder Scrolls VI gets another teaser trailer…
Back to Songs of the Past though. Like we said, little is known about the expansion’s story but it already sounds like one last send-off for Geralt.
Blood and Wine was arguably the best send-off he could have gotten but perhaps this new tale will be even better.
Maybe it’ll even give us a few clues on what Ciri will be getting up to in The Witcher IV, as well as what kind of role Geralt will play in her upcoming story.
