The Witcher III: Wild Hunt hides a genius Easter Egg that punishes you for being mean to cows, and it also doubles as a Legend of Zelda callback moment.
CD Projekt Red delivered one of the greatest RPGS ever made and it’ll hopefully deliver another with The Witcher IV.
The next game will follow Ciri but plot details have remained under wraps. Judging from the teaser trailer though it looks like it’ll be a grim affair. Witcher games have done great things with a darker tone, but there’s still plenty of levity to enjoy too, and there’s no greater example than The Witcher III’s demonic cow attack.
We were reminded of this hilarious in-game event by SicklyTheNinJa on X. In The Witcher III if you rapidly dispatch several cows, the game will punish you by summoning an overpowered chort to your location. A chort is a demon-like monster that’s blisteringly fast and super strong. It can also recover quickly, making it a pain to put down, even for Geralt.
Should one of these creatures attack you for your cow-killing spree, you may be able to put up a fight, but it’ll test even the most skilled players.
Advert
It serves you right though. Sure, murdering cows in the game will net you some crafting materials but that’s not to say you should be slaughtering them with no rhyme or reason.
The Easter Egg also feels like a callback to a popular Legend of Zelda secret that appears in several of the series’ games.
In titles like The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link can encounter the Hyrule version of chickens, Cuccos.
You can’t kill them but you can harass them with attacks. They’ll shriek and jump about but eventually they’ll decide enough is enough and summon an entire swarm of Cuccos to attack Link. It’s usually not enough to kill you but like The Witcher III’s bovine countermeasure, it’s a firm slap on the wrist for those mean enough to abuse animals.
The Witcher III is packed with secrets like this and we could talk for hours about all of its Easter Eggs and references.
Some of the highlights in our opinion, are the Dark Souls bonfire you can find in the Blood and Wine expansion, the white rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and a Tyrion Lannister reference from Game of Thrones.
The Witcher IV will likely dwarf its predecessor in terms of open-world size, so we're expecting many more clever secrets and Easter Eggs in the next CD Projekt Red adventure game.
