The Witcher return delayed to 2027 as DLC synergy looks likely

The Witcher season five on Netflix has reportedly been delayed, which may suspiciously have something to do with the upcoming CD Projekt RED expansion.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is without question one of the best fantasy RPGs of all time, as reflected by its 92 Metacritic score, earning the “Must-Play” accolade.

The CD Projekt RED title was so good, in fact, that despite being the third game in the series inspired by the Andrzej Sapkowski novels, it was many fans' introduction to the franchise. However, perhaps the same can’t be said about the Netflix series, well, at least right now.

The Witcher 3 was released in 2015 and later supported by two fantastic expansions. Hearts of Stone arrived that same year, and Blood and Wine in 2016. However, ten years after the last expansion, CDPR announced a third expansion in May 2026, titled Songs of the Past.

The Witcher Season 5 was set for 2026

The final season of The Witcher on Netflix was set to arrive at some point this year. But as reported by IGN, it’s now apparently been pushed back to 2027, which just so happens to be the same release year as the aforementioned Songs of the Past.

It’s no secret that The Witcher on Netflix has seen a massive decline since season three, some may say before that. Season four has seemingly not fared better, but could its reported delay have anything to do with the upcoming expansion?

With the likes of Amazon’s Fallout series, it can give the video game counterpart a boost in player numbers, as it would have done for the live-action viewership the other way round. So, it’s not outside the realm of possibility that if Songs of the Past launches around the same time as season five, it could give the final season on Netflix a decent boost in viewership.

The Witcher on Netflix started great

The Witcher premiered on Netflix in December 2019 and starred Henry Cavill as the leading man, Geralt of Rivia. By most accounts, season one was well received, but it began going downhill towards the end of the second season. Unfortunately, the series is arguably at its worst now, with Henry Cavill walking away from the series, and that role now belongs to Liam Hemsworth.

While the critic and audience scores have mostly been quite mixed from season one to three, season four has hit its overall lowest scores on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn't the best start for Liam Hemsworth.

Season four has scored 59% from critics and just 19% from the audience, so it’s no wonder that season five of The Witcher will be the last. We have a feeling that no matter what happens in season five, it wouldn't be all that surprising if both the scores and viewership take even more of a nosedive. Whether the expansion can give it a boost remains to be seen.
