Zelda: Ocarina of Time positioned for GTA 6 rivalry as release date reveal set

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake may be positioning itself for a direct rivalry with Grand Theft Auto VI, if the rumoured release date reveal is anything to go by.

Announced earlier this year, the Ocarina of Time remake seeks to reimagine the entire game with modern graphics and gameplay similar to the one Nintendo did for Star Fox in June.

Revealed with a rather vague 2026 release window, we don't actually know the exact release date for Ocarina of Time's remake just yet, but many people have made educated guesses on when they expect it to land.

What's more, the release date reveal for the remake may be upon us, following a new rumoured Nintendo Direct.

Rumoured Nintendo Direct could bring an Ocarina of Time release date

As reported by Gamereactor, the next Nintendo Direct is rumoured for September 10.

This lines up with what Nintendo has done in the past, holding Directs in the weeks before Tokyo Game Show, which usually occurs in late September.

This year, TGS takes place between 17-21 September, which would mean a Direct happening the week before would be pretty much a given.

Gamereactor also points to a post by the Just Dance social media account on X regarding the release of early information on Just Dance: Decades of Hits.

Ubisoft typically only releases information on Just Dance during Ubisoft Forward or Nintendo Directs, further hinting at one taking place on this date.

This is likely to be the last major Nintendo Direct of the year, showing off games that Nintendo intends to release within the next 6 to 12 months.

Therefore, it's very likely that we'll get a release date reveal for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake along with a new trailer.

So far, we've only seen a short snippet of the Ocarina of Time remake. Revealed at the Nintendo Direct in June, the first trailer only showed a short clip of Child Link sleeping at his home in Kokiri Forest.

Aside from that, we haven't seen anything else from the game, including other locations like Hyrule Castle Town, Death Mountain, or Gerudo Valley. Though the trailer seems to imply that the art style will be realistic yet stylised similar to the original, it's difficult to really see how it'll turn out.

Still, with only a few months left in the year, it's likely that we'll see the Ocarina of Time remake primed to launch somewhere around the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Although that may sound like a bad idea on Nintendo's part, you have to remember that Ocarina of Time will be a Switch 2 exclusive, while GTA VI is only releasing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

We also can't think there's too much of a crossover in appeal between Grand Theft Auto and The Legend of Zelda. Sure, there'll be people who are fans of both, but it's not like the franchises are similar enough that they'll eat into each other's sales.
