Gaming’s summer showcase season draws to a close today with the latest Nintendo Direct, that is until Gamescom’s Opening Night Live in late August.

The event has delivered some fun reveals including the imminent arrival of a free update and paid expansion pass for 2026 hit Pokémon Pokopia, as well as a free playtest for FromSoftware’s Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive The Duskbloods.

The event’s headliner, however, is the previously leaked remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Yes, the remake is real. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake marks the return of an all-time great. Literally, it has a score of 99 on Metacritic.

Launching exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 systems, the remake is due to ours later this year. Unfortunately, an exact release date beyond '2026' wasn't confirmed.

However, we do now know that the former leak was correct which claimed that the remake would be launching within the holiday season, so it's likely that Ocarina of Time won't drop until November or December.

Could it be one of the very few titles to go head to head with Grand Theft Auto VI, which is currently due to launch on 19 November?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's teaser trailer is very brief, but it does show us the updated art style of the remake which does feel true to the original while also feeling very modern.

It's quite far removed from what gamers experienced in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom as those titles opted for a more stylised approach, with Ocarina of Time falling more into the category of traditional 3D animation.

This is just a cinematic trailer, so it's hard to know what this animation style will look like translated to gameplay. Of course, as the trailer features no gameplay, we also have no idea what to expect in that department.

It's perhaps reasonable to say that Nintendo will be opting simply to bring this classic to a modern audience rather than innovate in anyway.

The original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time's Metacritic score shows that it was a near-perfect game. Developers aren't going to want to rock the boat too much by straying away from that original formula.

Already fans are showing their immense excitement for the remake, with very little trepidation actually.

"I cried," one social media viewer remarked, while another added, "This puts me right back to 1998. I can't believe it's happening. I'm actually emotional right now."

Someone wrote, "This is incredible."

This is, among the hype, some dismay that Nintendo revealed the game using such a brief teaser, especially as Ocarina of Time is somewhat close to release with only half of 2026 remaining.

My guess is that it'll get its own Nintendo Direct in the coming months. I suppose Nintendo doesn't want to direct the attention too far away from imminent releases like Splatoon Raiders and Star Fox.
