Resident Evil is back in a big way, but as Capcom continues to capitalise on the franchise's 30th anniversary, is it any surprise it's betting big on one of its most iconic IPs? Whereas Dino Crisis looks like it's gone extinct, the gaming giant is tipped to give us an (itchy) tasty tease of what's coming next for the Resiverse. We've already seen Resident Evil Requiem break records in 2026, and while some of you might already be looking ahead to what Resident Evil 10 entails, others are getting a crick in their necks from looking backward.
Considering the eclectic history of Resident Evil games, Capcom has arguably set the standard for remakes. Away from the lauded GameCube overhaul of the OG Resident Evil, many consider 2019's Resident Evil 2 one of the best horror games of all time.
Although that wasn't quite the case for 2020's Resident Evil 3 remake, Capcom was again firing on all cylinders with a Resident Evil 4 revisit in 2023. Even the RE3 remake was a licence to print money for Capcom, so we're eagerly anticipating what comes next.
Discussing all things Resi on the Residence of Evil YouTube channel, J.J. Trulock has given an update on what's going on with the long-rumoured Resident Evil – Code: Veronica remake. After releasing on the Dreamcast (of all things) back in 2000, the title has largely remained untouched since it was expanded as Code: Veronica X in the West.
Talk of a modern Code: Veronica remake goes all the way back to 2022, when series producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said that while Capcom hadn’t completely ruled out the idea, there were no concrete plans to revisit the story. Trulock noted that he actually started Residence of Evil due to similar comments made about fans asking nicely for the Resident Evil 2 remake that we eventually got.

Capcom is also accused of shutting down a fan remake of Code: Veronica, throwing further fuel on the fire that it's officially coming back to the title. At the core of the video are continued claims from noted insider Dusk Golem that Code: Veronica could be revealed in 2026 and aim for a 2027 release.
Dusk Golem recently posted on X and suggested why the "Leon Must Die Forever" mode was released a month ahead of Summer Game Fest: "My prediction is maybe they did that to allow Code Veronica Remake to have its moment, I suspect we'll get a Resident Evil Showcase later this year for CVR/RE9 DLC/Cregger's film/30th anniversary stuff too."
Remembering that the RE4 remake was announced before the Shadows of Rose DLC, this kind of tactic isn't unheard of. We'll already be watching Summer Game Fest from June 5 to June 8, but now, there could be even more reason to tune in.

When/if a Code: Veronica remake is finally announced, there will be obvious questions about what comes next. Will we go back to the (chronological) start and get a Resident Evil Zero remake to give Billy Coen his time to shine? Or, will we keep moving forward and tackle the infamously controversial Resident Evil 5? Capcom's champions have been cheering for an RE5 revamp long before RE4 got a dusting off, with supporters saying it offers the most scope to right the wrongs of the past. Things are once again getting a little confusing with the ever-complicated Resiverse timeline, and with Code: Veronica taking place a whopping six years before RE4, many questioned why Capcom jumped ahead with its remakes. Many feared that Code: Veronica would be left chilling in the confines of Umbrella's Antarctic base, but giving us the win we've long hoped for, it could finally be time to defrost Steve Burnside.
