Resident Evil Requiem has dropped a surprise free update that’s available right now, bringing a brand new game mode to the 2026 release.
In what is already a stacked year for amazing video game releases, one of the best releases of 2026 has just gotten even better, Resident Evil Requiem.
In March 2026, Capcom revealed that Resident Evil Requiem would be getting a free content update, as well as a brand new story expansion. While we’re still waiting on the story DLC, expected to drop sometime soon, the free content update has arrived.
The free content update is called ‘Leon Must Die Forever’, and by the looks of it, it’s similar to the Resident Evil 7: Biohazard mode ‘Ethan Must Die’ as well as ‘Dante Must Die’ in the Devil May Cry series.

The update also fixes a game-breaking progression bug and improves the Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers of PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller.
Essentially, it’s a survival mode that requires you, as the player, to ensure that Leon S. Kennedy survives for as long as possible against waves of increasingly difficult-to-kill enemies.
Players will need to progress through various stages taken from the main campaign. Each enemy that you kill will earn you points. The aim of the game is not only to survive and reach the final stage, but also to score as many points as possible.
You can also increase the timer by shooting little glowing spiders. I suppose it’s like a combination of ‘Ethan Must Die’ and ‘The Mercenaries’ modes with that in mind. There are also glowing doors in each stage that will spawn you into different areas. New challenges are also available to earn 'Challenge Points' and unlock new items.
Once the latest update has downloaded and installed, the ‘Leon Must Die Forever’ mode can be found in ‘Extra Game Modes’ via the main menu of Resident Evil Requiem. The free mode is available across all platforms.
I find it interesting that the ‘Extra Game Modes’ is plural, so hopefully, more free content is on the way. As for the upcoming paid story DLC, we’ll update you once Capcom releases new information.
“As a horror game in its own right, Resident Evil Requiem is a very solid nine out of ten, but as a passionate fan of the series, it earns an additional bonus point thanks to the attention to detail and craft that’s gone into every pore of this game,” I said in my review.
Resident Evil Requiem is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
