It seems that the most divisive Resident Evil game might not get a remake after all, despite being one of the most successful games in the series.
In recent years, especially, Capcom has been knocking it out of the park with its remakes of the popular survival horror series. The 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2 is one of the best games in the series, and that level of standard was continued with Resident Evil 4 in 2023. Now, fans have a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica to look forward to.
There have been various rumours making the rounds that Capcom may even remake the original Resident Evil for the second time, along with RE0 and perhaps RE5, which could follow after Resident Evil: Veronica. However, it seems that at least one game mentioned in this paragraph might not be getting a remake.
According to industry insider Dusk Golem, who has a decent knock of being somewhat reliable, when replying to a follower on Twitter, regarding the prospect of Resident Evil 5 being remade, here’s what they had to say:
“While I think a Resident Evil 5 remake will probably happen in the future due to fan demand, at present, I've heard there's not a strong desire within the company to remake RE5 presently; there are other projects the team wants to do more.”
Advert
Of course, whether or not Dusk Golem speaks the truth, we should take the above comment with a pinch of salt, unless confirmed otherwise. What’s more, even if Capcom did decide to remake Resident Evil 5, its arrival would likely be years away.
For starters, we have the first paid story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem, not to mention Resident Evil Veronica. Then, judging by Capcom’s previous patterns, it would likely release a new story in the series following the Code: Veronica remake.
That’s the burning question, but it could depend on at least two factors. Is Resident Evil 5 a popular enough game to warrant a remake? The answer to that would be a yes.
Despite removing pretty much all horror from the game in favour of action, making it an entry somewhat frowned upon by some fans, it’s actually the best-selling game in the series, with over 19 million copies sold.
So, why wouldn't Capcom remake Resident Evil 5? Well, that could be down to the game's stereotypical portrayal of African culture. The colour of a character's skin isn't the problem; it’s how Resident Evil 5 perceives them that could be the main issue.
If Resident Evil 5 were to be remade, it would likely require that much of an overhaul; it could lose a lot of its identity. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is subjective.
That being said, perhaps an RE5 that moves away from action into survival horror might not be a bad thing after all.
