We’re not surprised!

Resident Evil Requiem has smashed a huge record that was once held by a surprising entry and a popular remake, and to be honest, we’re not surprised this has happened.

At the end of February 2026, after what felt like a torturous wait, Capcom finally released the latest entry in its ever-popular survival horror series, with Resident Evil Requiem.

Thankfully, the wait for Resident Evil Requiem was more than worth it, because it’s been well received from critics and fans across the board. On the aggregate website Metacritic, it has scored 89 from critics and 9.4 from users. While on OpenCritic, it has also scored 89 from critics and 100 from users.

Resident Evil Requiem Earns My First 10/10!

“As a horror game in its own right, Resident Evil Requiem is a very solid nine out of ten, but as a passionate fan of the series, it earns an additional bonus point thanks to the attention to detail and craft that’s gone into every pore of this game,” I said in my review.

What Record Has Resident Evil Requiem Smashed?

As good as critical and fan reception is, arguably, the most important factor for a product from a publisher's perspective is how much revenue it brings in, and I would assume that Resident Evil Requiem is no exception.

In a blog post, Capcom has confirmed that at the time of writing, since its launch on 27 February 2026, Resident Evil Requiem is the fastest-selling game in the series, shifting over six million units worldwide across all platforms.

This follows the news of Capcom confirming that a Resident Evil Requiem story expansion is in the works and a free content update is arriving this May.

These impressive numbers not only confirm that single-player games are absolutely not a dying breed, but Resident Evil Requiem is on track to become the best-selling game in the series.

Perhaps to the surprise of many, the current best-selling new game is Resident Evil 5 at 17.1 million, and in terms of remakes, it’s 2019’s Resident Evil 2 with 16.8 million. You might also be surprised to know that Resident Evil 6 is in third place with 16.5 million, a game widely considered as one of the worst entries in the series.

Sure, Resident Evil Requiem has still got some ways to go for it to claim the throne from Resident Evil 5, but it wouldn't surprise me if it claims that spot in the next year or two.

Resident Evil Requiem is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
