PlayStation Plus subscribers livid at 'vile' new announcement and free games

PlayStation fans are absolutely slamming Sony for the poor state of PlayStation Plus, as well as the horrendous price-hike for its tiers.

It’s been less than 24 hours since PlayStation announced its next line-up of PlayStation Plus Essential games. While it’s always nice to get three free games, the last few monthly offerings have been abysmal, and fans haven’t hidden their discontent.

Check out the trailer for the upcoming PS5 game, Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Yesterday though was seemingly the final nail in the coffin, the last straw, the coup de grace, and its driven fans around the bend.

PlayStation published a blogpost outlining the next three games that’d be available for PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium subscribers to download. These were Saints Row (2022), Black Desert–Traveler Edition and Generation Zero. While these aren’t the worst titles in the world, they’re certainly lacklustre compared to what fans were hoping for.

However, that wasn’t the biggest letdown, as down towards the bottom of the post was a cheeky announcement that the price of all PlayStation Plus tiers would be increased.

The new prices will be as follows:

PlayStation Plus Essential 12-Month Subscription- 79.99 USD | 71,99 Euro | 59.99 GBP | 6,800 Yen

PlayStation Plus Extra 12-Month Subscription-134.99 USD | 125,99 Euro | 99.99 GBP | 11,700 Yen

PlayStation Plus Premium 12-Month Subscription- 159.99 USD | 151,99 Euro | 119.99 GBP | 13,900 Yen

Fans couldn’t be more livid, and took their rage to a Reddit post by Turbostrider27 which announced the new line-up.

“Raising the price of Extra by $35?! What the actual f***?! Unless they're gonna start putting games on their Day 1, they can f*** right off.”

“$80 for the lowest tier 💀 what in the f***”

“These new prices are f****** vile $80 a year to play online games???!!! A $20 JUMP!!!!!!!!????”

Whether Sony follows through with the new prices is another question entirely. Xbox once tried something similar with Xbox Live Gold, but back-pedalled after all the outrage they endured from fans, so perhaps the PlayStation Plus price-hike could be a similar story.

The three free games will be available for subscribers on the 5th of September, with the price-hike going into effect during a similar time.
