PlayStation Plus' free games for September 2023 have been announced, and it looks like we're in for a fairly mixed bag.
It's been an okay few months for PlayStation Plus, with a bunch of great games on Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. If you're on Essential you can currently grab in August: PGA Tour 2K23, Dreams, and Death’s Door, while Extra subscribers can get further 17 games in August, including the 9/10 RPG Sea Of Stars.

This month's free games for Essential subscribers are headlined by Saints Row, which was actually leaked earlier in the week. Try and act surprised, won't you?
Alas, Fans have slammed Saints Row as one of the worst AAA games ever made. They (rightly) point out it's full of bugs (though I think this has been patched since), and generally not that good.
Saints Row has a critic score of 61, and a user score of just 2.9. In essence, even the critics who think Saints Row is quite good still think it's a bit rubbish.
Fortunately the other two free games fair better. You'll be able to get your hands on Black Desert - Traveler Edition, and Generation Zero.
Your PlayStation Plus Monthly Games for September are:

Not too shabby a line-up, really, unless you go ahead and look at the Metacritic scores for each game. Black Desert is an Open-World MMORPG that has a user score of 3.8 and a critic score of 61, so not exactly a banger.
Generation Zero doesn't fare much better, I fear. The open-world action game has a critic score of 51, and a user score of 5.6. So, if we're talking purely in terms of critical acclaim, PlayStation Plus' free games for September are severely lacking. Hopefully the free games for Extra and Premium subscribers announced later in the month will have better news for us.
