The old gods and the new are smiling down upon us, and if you like God of War games, rest assured that more are on the way. Some 21 years after Kratos first slashed his way onto the PlayStation 2 with the Blades of Chaos, the bald brute has a bright future ahead of him.
While some online spoiled the surprise ahead of time, God of War Laufey's reveal as a Faye-centric spin-off has definitely put the cat among the mythological pigeons. There's been a mixed response to the idea of a game dedicated to Kratos' second wife, but remembering that Laufey is an important figure in actual Norse mythology, she has a big part to play in both Kratos and Atreus' lives.
Not that anyone was buying that this would be the end of the road for the titular God of War, but now, Sony has reiterated that Kratos has plenty more PlayStation adventures under his belt.
Kratos is the God of War – we have many more stories to tell with him. For now, we’re excited to take fans on a journey into the afterlife of the gods with Faye and hope you’ll come along for the ride!

In an internally produced video, Santa Monica Studio's Cory Barlog sat down with Laufey’s game director, Ariel Lawrence. Here, Barlog reiterated that Laufey is part of the 'larger tapestry' of these mythologies, adding: "There's always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history."
Lawrence added: "We can't not tell stories about the big guy."

Responding to a clip of the interview shared on X, the official SMS account replied: "Kratos is the God of War – we have many more stories to tell with him. For now, we’re excited to take fans on a journey into the afterlife of the gods with Faye and hope you’ll come along for the ride!"
We could sit here all day and muse on ideas for where Kratos' story could go next, with many fans pitching a move into Chinese mythology. Others want to see him tossed back into Greek mythology, while Egyptian mythology has already been teased by Laufey's inclusion of a revamped Sekhmet as a major villain.

Although neither Barlog nor Lawrence was willing to reveal exactly what's next with Kratos, we at least know he'll have a role in Laufey. Away from reports that Tyr will return for an expanded part as a secret second protagonist, a brief appearance from Kratos in the Laufey reveal has teased the idea that he'll have much more of a presence than first thought.
This comes as something of a double-edged sword for SMS, as while some are anxious to flex their muscles as the Ghost of Sparta, we need to remember this is very much Faye's game. It's fair to say that her fighting style and skills are very different from Kratos', but the idea of waiting years before we get to play as him again is sure to disappoint.
Until we know more, it seems Kratos is confined to being a voice in the sky presence to guide Faye through the afterlife.
It's little solace to God of War purists that Kratos' next outing is likely a long way off, but then again, you wanted more God of War, and you've got more God of War.
