The highlight of PlayStation’s recent State of Play was easily the reveal of the long-rumoured God of War Laufey.
It’s not a prequel, sequel, or spin-off; instead, God of War Laufey is a story that runs concurrently to both God of War and God of War Ragnarök.
It turns out that Kratos’ dear wife, Faye, didn’t depart the living world peacefully.
Instead, she was whisked away to a hellish realm of dead gods known as Everywhen, with seemingly everyone having an issue with her presence.

In a 20-minute gameplay sequence taken from early in the game, Faye came face-to-face with Egyptian deity Sekhmet and Mongolian god Begtse.
“Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her funeral, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk,” the synopsis begins.
“To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods — the Everywhen — where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.”
Many are already suspecting that we’ll get the confirmation that it was Faye who blew the horn to summon the World Serpent in God of War, a mystery that has remained unanswered for many years.

Faye is set to be joined on her journey by Phranque, a talking gelatinous cube that presents Faye with a sword, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon attached to said sword.
It’s all a bit strange but God of War Laufey looks fantastic, despite what idiots on the internet would have you believe.
Faye is clearly taking centre stage in this title, although Kratos will cameo throughout.
It turns out that God of War Laufey is seemingly hiding a second playable protagonist though, Tyr.
Several months ago, as reported by MP1ST, a leak surfaced claiming to have intel on a new God of War game.
The moment the leaker started referencing talking objects and jelly cubes, many of us wrote the leak off as complete nonsense.
Clearly, they did actually have correct intel though, so it’s now worth revisiting what else was said in the leak.
Well, the leaker claimed that Tyr is the game’s second playable character first and foremost.

Tyr can’t exist in the Everywhen as he’s alive and well, but he may be the story's bridge to the living realm.
If you recall, there are quite a few gaps in Tyr’s story, as most of the Tyr we saw in Ragnarök was actually an imposter.
The leak further added that Mayan, Japanese, and Chinese mythologies would be featured, which also seems sensical now that we know this is a realm of all gods.
Finally, the leaker said that the sword is related to Merlin.
Ever since God of War Laufey’s trailer dropped, many have been trying to work out exactly what’s going on with Phranque, as no mythology contains a sentient jelly cube.
Some are now theorising that the cube may be a portion of the waters from Arthurian legends that presented the sword Excalibur.
One Reddit user wrote, “The game 100% ends with her [Faye] in England as Morgan Le Faye,” referencing the enchantress Morgan Le Fay from Arthurian legend.
It’s a very convincing theory.
By all accounts, God of War Laufey is launching sooner than you might expect, but it’s a shame that we don’t have a precise release date yet.
We can’t wait to get our hands on this one.
