Sony has teased the return of Kratos following the reveal of God of War Laufey’s release date.

At the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 (reported via IGN), it was confirmed that the game will be releasing on February 16, 2027 for PlayStation 5.

Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog also confirmed that a Kratos-led game would be coming after the release of God of War Laufey, and that the next chapter of his story would directly connect to the events of Laufey’s game.

Aside from that, there aren’t many more details on the game. We don’t know how far along this new Kratos game is in development, when we can expect a release date, and what platforms it’ll be targeting.

On the other hand, the panel also revealed some more details about God of War Laufey, which features Marvel star Deborah Ann Woll in the titular role, along with Jack Quaid as Phranque and Perlina Lau as Rue.

“Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next,” explained Barlog. “Phranque has been around since the beginning. It's interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.”

Santa Monica Studio will continue making Kratos-led God of War games

After God of War Laufey was revealed in June, reaction to the game was rather mixed. While fans enjoyed a first-look at the combat, some were disappointed that Kratos was not the main playable character this time around.

Barlog defended this decision to switch out the main protagonist by saying “there's always going to be Kratos games” in an interview posted to PlayStation’s YouTube channel.

“Faye is, while it's a different thing, it's still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly really want to explore, all of these different characters in there,” ha added. “But there's always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history. We're super excited about that.”

Laufey, also known as Faye, was a huge presence in the previous two God of War games, but did not physically appear aside from a few flashbacks in God of War Ragnarok. It’s her death before the events of God of War (2018) which sets the plot of the two games into motion.

Meanwhile, God of War Laufey will take place simultaneously to the previous two games, showing Faye’s journey through the Everywhen, a realm which serves as an afterlife for gods from all sorts of different mythologies.

Sekhmet and Begtse are set to appear in the game, as well as other figures from different historical myths and legends.

In addition to this, Santa Monica Studio is also working on a remake of the first three God of War games which make up the Greek mythology arc of the series. There is currently no release date announced for this, but original Kratos actor TC Carson will be reprising the role.
