God of War Laufey arrives on PS5 in February 2027, putting Kratos' second wife, Faye - also known as Laufey - in the spotlight for the first time.
The story begins with Faye's funeral, before she unexpectedly awakens in the Everywhen, an afterlife where gods from different mythologies battle for power. Rather than being a traditional prequel to 2018's God of War, this new adventure explores Faye's life beyond death.
Pre-orders are now live for God of War Laufey, with the latest official development being the announcement of a limited Collector Box. However, there's one rather important catch: it doesn't actually include a copy of the game, which you'll need to purchase separately.
In this article, we'll cover everything you need to know about Santa Monica Studio's upcoming God of War adventure, including its release date, available editions, gameplay and everything else confirmed so far. We'll also keep this page updated as more relevant and official details are released ahead of launch.

Which platforms is God of War Laufey coming to?
At the moment, God of War Laufey has been confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. There is no PS4 version and it has not been confirmed for PC.
Is God of War Laufey a sequel or spin-off?
God of War Laufey is neither a traditional prequel nor a direct sequel. With its story beginning after Faye's funeral at the start of God of War (2018), it follows her journey through the Everywhen while Kratos and Atreus begin their own journey to scatter her ashes.
Advert
What's more, while it's not a direct continuation of God of War Ragnarök, Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that Faye's story will help set up what's next for the franchise, with the next Kratos-led game connecting directly to the events of Laufey.
Of course, with God of War serving as a soft reboot of the series following Kratos' shenanigans in Greece, it was a perfect entry point for newcomers. Thankfully, God of War Laufey will offer the same standalone experience, meaning you won't need to have played the previous games to enjoy Faye's new adventure.
God of War Laufey story and the Everywhen explained
“Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk,” reads the synopsis of the game.
As already established, you play as Faye, Kratos' second wife and Atreus' mother. The story begins just after her funeral, as Kratos and Atreus set out to scatter her ashes. However, unbeknownst to Kratos and Atreus, Faye awakens in the Everywhen. She then realises that the plan she had put in motion to protect her family is now at risk, and her primary goal is to find a way home to protect the people she loves.
The Everywhen is the afterlife of the gods, with Santa Monica Studio describing it as the birthplace and endpoint of all magic. In God of War (2018), there are nine known realms, but the Everywhen exists beyond the Nine Realms. It's a place where gods and creatures from many mythologies exist together.
When Faye realises that she is in the Everywhen, she discovers that the magic of the godly realm has been disrupted and that she is in immediate danger. Faye is placed in a prison during the God of War Laufey 20-minute gameplay reveal, but it's not yet known whether the Everywhen is a paradise or a prison. No doubt, those secrets will gradually be uncovered when the game is released.
What do we know about God of War Laufey gameplay
Faye has a different fighting style from Kratos. She seems to rely more on fast-paced, fluid action and magic instead of brute force and physical strength. The game looks to blend the gameplay of the God of War Norse-era games with the mobility of the original Greek-era titles. It also has vibes of classic Devil May Cry, with Faye's aerial mobility and combat focusing on chain attacks.

Faye weapons, abilities, and companions
As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Faye has two main weapons at her disposal: a mysterious magical sword guarded by Rue, and the Serpent Bow. The bow has the shifting form of a serpent, allowing Faye to fire arrows almost instantly. It can unleash rapid-fire, explosive and multi-target shots, giving her options for both close-quarters and ranged combat.
Faye also has access to the soul-manipulation abilities that made her such a powerful member of the Jötnar. Using her Golden Hand, she can tear the soul away from an enemy's body, attack it directly and even knock it into other enemies to create combos.
She won't be fighting entirely alone, either. Phranque is a curious cosmic cube with deep ties to the Everywhen, while Rue is an enchanted set of ribbons tasked with guarding the powerful sword. Phranque can also launch enemies into the air, allowing Faye to follow up with her bow.
Much like Kratos, Faye can customise her weapons and gear, including the sword's Blade, the bow's Scales, armour and Catalysts. Each offers different perks, stats or effects to support various playstyles, while the Serpent Bow also has unlockable skills. The game will also encourage exploration, with a vast world to discover and hidden mysteries to uncover. How much freedom we'll be given to explore remains to be seen.
God of War Laufey cast and characters
In terms of confirmed characters and mythologies, Faye, the protagonist, is a legendary Jötnar warrior known as the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, and she is played by Deborah Ann Woll. Faye has two companions that we know of so far: Phranque, a curious cosmic cube with strong ties to the Everywhen, who is voiced by Jack Quaid.
Then we have Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with protecting a powerful and mysterious sword, voiced by Perlina Lau. And yes, both of the latter two characters are quite literally a cube and a ribbon.
In the gameplay reveal, we're also introduced to Sekhmet, an Egyptian goddess who appears to be at least one of the main antagonists of the game. She is accompanied by Begtse, a Tibetan Buddhist deity. At the time of writing, it hasn't been officially confirmed which actors are playing these characters.

What is in the God of War Laufey Collector Box

The God of War Laufey Collector Box has an RRP of $149.99/£129.99 and includes the following content, as detailed on the PlayStation Blog:
- Light-Up Faye Statue – An eight-inch-tall statue featuring Faye, Phranque and Rue fighting against Begtse's soldiers. Phranque will light up when the statue is plugged into a USB power source.
- 51-Card Oracle Deck – Featuring custom illustrations for each card by the talented Megan Lara, the Oracle Deck is a beautiful representation of your adventure through the Everywhen.
- Physical Mini Artbook – Concept art depicting the characters, creatures and environments of God of War Laufey, hand-selected by our talented art team at Santa Monica Studio.
Sadly, as stated at the top of this article, the God of War Laufey Collector Box does not include a physical or digital copy of the game, nor does it include pre-order bonus DLC. I guess that's why it's called a "Collector Box" and not a "Collector's Edition". This item will launch alongside the game on the same release date, 16 February 2027.
God of War Laufey preload download size and performance
At the time of writing, the preload date and time, download size, as well as the performance and graphics modes have not been confirmed by Sony Interactive Entertainment or Santa Monica Studio. All we know right now is that God of War Laufey will embrace 4K visuals (with a compatible display), fast loading times through the PS5's SSD, as well as 3D audio, and will take advantage of the DualSense controller's haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
We'll update this article when those details are officially released for God of War Laufey.
