God of War fans finally got to see what Santa Monica Studio has been cooking up earlier this week.
God of War Laufey will be the latest game in the series’ canon, swapping out the series’ protagonist Kratos for his wife Laufey, whose death before God of War (2018) set the game’s events into motion.
Played by True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll, the game depicts Laufey’s journey through Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods for every mythology.
Debuting with 20 minutes of gameplay during the PlayStation State of Play, fans had a chance to see some of the early story, exploration, and combat that will be present in God of War Laufey.

Although a release date has not been confirmed by Sony or Santa Monica Studio yet, a new report has suggested that the release might be much sooner than expected.
As Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier suggested on his own Bluesky profile, God of War Laufey will likely release sooner than 2028.
“FWIW I wouldn't read too much into God of War Laufey not getting a release date or window — in contrast to a lot of other big announcements, this one *isn't* years away,” Schreier posted.
In a reply to someone asking if it was coming out in 2028, he said, “definitely not”.

This places it as either a 2026 or 2027 release, but considering Sony already has Marvel’s Wolverine locked in for September, next year is looking more likely.
This does call into question the whereabouts of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The game was originally announced at The Game Awards 2024, and rumours pointed to a possible 2027 release for the game.
However, with Naughty Dog’s next game being a no-show at last night’s State of Play, it seems that Intergalactic might actually be a 2028 release, leaving the window open for God of War Laufey to arrive next year.
If we were to guess, a late 2027 release is most likely, putting a whole year after GTA VI and filling out Sony’s back half of the year.

The GTA VI release window also seems to be affecting other games slated for this year, with September looking pretty stacked already. Silent Hill: Townfall, Control Resonant, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword will all be coming out at the end of September, along with many other games.
Meanwhile, games like Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Fable, which were originally announced for 2026, have been pushed back to next year to give them breathing room. Both games will be released in February.
The blurb on God of War Laufey reads: "Death was supposed to be the end, but for Laufey (Faye), warrior and wife to Kratos, a new adventure is just beginning. Awakening unexpectedly in a strange land after her death, Faye discovers the plans she put in place to protect Kratos and Atreus in her absence are now at risk.
"To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic.
"Harness Faye's speed, control and relentlessness to overwhelm even the fiercest of foes with decisive, deadly precision."
